Howarth & Smith employs law students from law schools throughout the United States for summer and term-time positions. Summer Associates at Howarth & Smith are immersed in the heart of the practice of high stakes litigation and participate in all facets of the civil litigation process, from discovery through preparation for trial and, ultimately, trial and appeal.
Howarth & Smith is virtually unique among trial firms in the United States in its handling of a wide range of cases at both the trial and appellate level on both the plaintiff and defense side. This opportunity provides Summer Associates with a broad experience in both federal and state law, including strategizing for trial, case management, research and writing approaches, developing their knowledge of substantive legal issues, and preparing complex cases for trial and appeal.
Summer Associates participate in all aspects of the firm's practice. They work closely with supervising attorneys on research and writing projects, observe and assist with client meetings and court appearances, and attend firm seminars to deepen their understanding of important legal topics.
Summer Associates work with associates and partners in preparing various legal documents, including pleadings and legal memoranda, and are responsible for researching cases, finding supporting authorities, and analyzing various legal issues in cases. They also help in preparing attorneys for court appearances and depositions. To a lesser degree, they are also involved in planning case management and trial strategy.
Frequent, informal feedback is an essential part of the give-and-take of a small firm, and ongoing supervision and assessment is given with each project by the attorney responsible for the individual assignment.
In addition, the firm’s summer social program enables Summer Associates to get to know the members of the firm on a more relaxed and personal level.
In 1993, Howarth & Smith initiated its Oxford-Cambridge Fellowship program where outstanding law graduates of the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge spend 9 months with the firm as law clerks.
Howarth & Smith has special links with these two leading British universities. Partners Don Howarth and Suzelle M. Smith are Visiting Fellows of Lady Margaret Hall College at the University of Oxford and have frequently lectured at Murray Edwards College at the University of Cambridge.
There is substantial diversity among such fellows. Past Oxford and Cambridge fellows have hailed from Nepal, Ethiopia, India, Singapore, Germany, and Northern Ireland, as well as many from England. International fellows have a unique opportunity to compare the United States legal system with that of their native countries.
The firm is actively interested in hearing from outstanding law students and graduates of Oxford or Cambridge who would value the opportunity to experience United States trial law while simultaneously learning and contributing to Howarth & Smith's ongoing tradition of a program that blends United States law clerks with those from Oxford and Cambridge.
