Howarth & Smith employs law students from American law schools
for summer and term time internships. The U.S. internship
program immers es law students in the heart of the practice of
high stakes litigation. Interns at Howarth & Smith participate
in all facets of the civil litigation process, from discovery
through preparation for trial and, ultimately, trial and appeal.
Howarth & Smith is virtually unique among trial firms in the
United States in its handling of a wide range of cases at both
the trial and appellate level, and on both the plaintiff and
defense side. This provides interns with broad experience in
both federal and state law including strategies for trial and
case management; research and writing approaches; specific
knowledge of substantive legal issues; and the process of
preparing complex cases for trial and appeal. Interns work
closely with supervising attorneys on research and writing
projects, observing and assisting with client meetings and court
appearances, and also attending firm seminars on specific legal
topics. Interns participate in all aspects of the firm's
practice. Frequent, informal feedback is an essential part of
the give-and-take of a small firm, as is the firm’s summer
social program, which enables interns to get to know the members
of the firm on a more relaxed personal level.
Interns work with associates and partners in preparing various
legal documents, including pleadings and legal memoranda, and in
preparing attorneys for appearances in court and at depositions.
They are also responsible for researching cases and articles,
and analyzing legal issues in certain specific cases. To a
lesser degree they are involved in planning case management and
trial strategy. Ongoing supervision and assessment is given with
each project by the attorney responsible for the individual
assignment.
In 1993, Howarth & Smith initiated its Oxford-Cambridge
internship program, in which outstanding law graduates of these
English universities spend 6-9 months with the firm as law
clerks. Howarth & Smith has special links with these two
leading British
universities, where partners Don Howarth and Suzelle Smith are
Visiting Fellows of Lady Margaret Hall and New Hall colleges.
There is substantial diversity among such interns, including
past Oxford and Cambridge interns who hail from Nepal, Ethiopia,
India, Singapore, and Northern Ireland, as well as from England.
International interns have a unique opportunity to compare the
U.S. legal system with that of their native countries.
The firm is actively interested in hearing from outstanding law
students and graduates who would value an opportunity to
experience the practice of U.S. trial law, while learning and
contributing simultaneously as a part of Howarth & Smith's
ongoing tradition of a program that blends U.S. law clerks with
those from Oxford and Cambridge.
Anyone interested in applying for an internship with Howarth &
Smith should send a resume to attorney Darcy Harris.
